According to the ancient
sources the promontory of Licosa takes its name
from that of the mermaid Leucosia who was
engulfed there for her love of Ulysses. Actually, it seems that
the sirens were two: Leucosia and Leucotea. Homer, in fact, speaks about the promontory
of “the two sirens” as far as the journey of Ulysses is concerned. The
legend itself could suffice to justify the particular charm of this place.
Moreover, the splendid pinewood that overlooks the sea and the numerous
stony lanes that seem almost encarved along the
rocky coast, making the visit interesting and enjoyable. Like a real
terrace the Licosa promontory juts out into the
sea with its Meditteranean maquis, its ruins, its
vestiges of the constant human presence noticeable already since the
Ancient Greek times, than continued in the Roman times up to now. And
finally, the extraordinary aquariums of the Sea Museum Pioppi enable the visitor to have a look at the
submerged world and at the life forms present in the sea at different
depths.
