The Cilento Region offers to its visitors art, nature and archeology, but above all its crystal-clear sea that for years has been awarded the title of the “European Blue Flag” and the Cinque Vele (Five Sails) –the highest recognition of the Legambiente.

The Coast features a remarkable variety of landscapes, parting from beaches of fine sand to rocks high up above the sea; all this surrounded by the splendid Mediterranean maquis.

If you want to allow yourself a moment of a day’s rest you are spoilt for choice: from Paestum to Acciaroli, from Palinuro to Marina di Camerota, the beaches to visit are countless.
However, Cilento is also rich in archeologicalsites, famous all over the world: approximately two km from the Mouth of the River Sele there are the ruins of the Sanctuary of the Argive Hera, a place of worship dedicated to the Mother Goddess Hera.

Nevertheless, it is Paestum where the most important architectural vestiges of the Magna Graecia are preserved and where you can admire the fascinating and exciting spectacle of the Doric temples and intact ancient walls.

Here, to welcome the tourists coming from the sea, a long beach, kilometers of fine and golden sand and an extraordinary story to tell and to listen to, through the traces still fully present in the landscape of the ancients.

A little farther south than Paestum is situated the city of Agropoli, a medieval town and a popular tourist destination, with well-equipped beaches of fine sand and numerous summer residence houses and camping sites. Very enchanting is especially the Bay of Trentova, where the sea is particularly cristal-clear.

In Santa Maria di Castellabate it is possible to combine a sunny sea holiday with its intense night life, especially as regards the youths. The main street is crowded all day round. Nearby, one can have a dive into the splendid beach, where still can be seen the “rocchi”, i.e. the remains of a stone quarry once used to build the columns of the ancient Greek-Roman structures. A stopping place that cannot be missed by those who visit this locality is the Marine Park of Santa Maria di Castellabate, which since 1973 has been a Protected Sea Area. With its meadows of oceanic Posidonia (Neptune Grass), indentations and caves hosting morays, gropers, octopuses, breams and lobsters it is a real paradise for scuba divers.

Farther on, there is a very beautiful natural area of Punta Licosa, accessible by sea from San Marco or on foot from Ogliastro Marina by a mule track. Punta Licosa is a place linked to the old legend of the siren Leucosia, turned into a rock after having thrown herself down into the sea from the cliff due to her unrequited love. Nevertheless, apart from the myth, the beauty must be looked for on the golden sandy beach and in the sea of rocky seabeds rich in flora and posidonia.

Splendid are also the beaches of Acciaroli, where Hemingway loved staying, fascinated by the stony houses build on the rocks and linked to the road by gangways, and captivated by the calm of the little harbour and the colours of the sea.

Moving a little inland from the coast, a place worth visiting is Velia, where you can find a very important archeological site, within which you can visit the remains of the acropolis, of an Ionic temple and of a small theatre dating back to the III century B.C.

Coming back from the coast you arrive at Marina di Ascea, known above all for its wonderful beach about 5 km long, formed of coarse sand, and Marina di Pisciotta that features enchanting beaches where you can bathe even near the reef in the shade of a Saracen tower.
